Privacy policy

fortyfive helps you keep score, hear score announcements, and save and share tennis results. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the app, open one of our links, or contact us.

fortyfive is in testing. This policy covers the test versions on TestFlight and Google Play.

Who we are

fortyfive is provided by Alex Strasman Design Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 09346337, with its registered office at 19 Zeals Rise, Zeals, Warminster, England, BA12 6PJ. We’re responsible for the personal information we receive and use as described in this policy.

Contact us about privacy at privacy@playfortyfive.com.

Accounts and profiles

You need an account to use fortyfive. We use your email address to send sign-in codes and identify your account. We store an account identifier, your chosen display name, and any pronunciation spelling you provide. You can use a nickname or initials instead of your full name.

If you choose Continue with Apple, Apple gives us an identifier for your Apple Account and an email address, which can be a private relay address if you choose to hide your own.

You can choose an avatar or upload a profile photo. A photo is optional. Your email address isn’t displayed to other players.

Matches and cloud sync

The app saves matches on your device so you can keep score when the connection is poor. It also uploads match information to your account when you’re signed in and connected. This includes:

  • Player names, pronunciation spellings, and account identifiers for linked players
  • Match formats, point history, scores, dates, times, and results
  • Match display choices and the information needed to keep copies in sync
  • Confirmations, disputes, and any agreed score corrections

If matches already exist on your device when you first sign in, they’re uploaded to your account. Match changes can upload while you’re playing. Finished matches become available on your other devices and to linked participants. Signing out doesn’t delete the copies already stored on your device.

The app also remembers local preferences, such as sound and display settings. Your device’s backup service may include local app data in its backups, depending on your settings. Those backups are managed by your device or backup provider.

Friends and shared matches

We store friend connections, invitations and their use, and blocking choices to provide these features. Accepting a valid invitation makes the two accounts friends straight away. Someone who opens your invitation sees your profile name before they accept. Only share an invitation with someone you want to connect with.

You can also show a code for one match only. Someone who scans it is added to that match as a player, without you becoming friends. The code works for 15 minutes. We keep a record that they joined through it until either of you blocks the other or deletes your account.

Friends can see your profile name, pronunciation spelling, and profile picture. Finished matches are shared with the scorer and the players linked to that match, including its names, point history, result, and confirmation or dispute information. Becoming friends doesn’t give someone access to your other matches.

Confirmed results count in head-to-head statistics. A shared result that nobody disputes is treated as confirmed 7 days after it was shared. You can report an incorrect result from the match itself. This affects sporting statistics only. It isn’t a decision about your legal rights or your eligibility for anything.

Unfriending or blocking someone doesn’t erase match records already shared with them. People can also keep screenshots or copies outside the app.

Information entered by other players

Another player may enter your name, its pronunciation, and match results, or link your account to a match. We receive that information from the person recording the match, including when you don’t have a fortyfive account.

Please tell other players when you record their information, use only the details needed for scoring, and show them this policy. If someone has recorded information about you and you want to ask about it, contact privacy@playfortyfive.com. You don’t need an account to make a privacy request.

Sound and device permissions

Score announcements use your device’s speech service to read scores and player names aloud. People nearby or listening through a connected speaker may hear them. You can turn announcements off in the app.

fortyfive doesn’t record sound or use the microphone. This version doesn’t access your contacts or use location services.

If you allow it, the app uses your camera to scan a friend’s or a match’s QR code, and to take a profile photo. It keeps nothing from the camera except a photo you choose to use.

If you save a score image, the app asks for permission to add it to your photo library. It doesn’t browse or upload your existing photos for this. You can change the permission in your device settings and keep scoring without it.

If you upload a profile photo, you take it with the camera or pick it with your phone’s photo picker, and the app receives only that photo. The app shrinks it and saves it as a new image before uploading it. It’s kept in private storage that only you and your friends can view.

Watches and workouts

If you keep score from an Apple Watch or a Wear OS watch, the watch records the match as a tennis workout while you play. This keeps fortyfive open on your wrist, and the watch’s heart rate sensor is on during it, as it is for any workout.

On an Apple Watch, the workout is saved to the Health app when the match ends, as a tennis workout with when you played. Apple Watch adds your heart rate and the energy you burned to it, as it does for any workout.

On a Wear OS watch, the watch asks for permission to measure your heart rate and the energy you burn. When the match ends, it sends the workout to fortyfive on your phone, which saves it to Health Connect if you allow it: a tennis session with when you played and any pauses, and, if you allow them too, your heart rate readings and the energy you burned. You choose what fortyfive may save, and you can change it in Health Connect at any time.

fortyfive only adds workouts. It doesn’t read anything from Health or Health Connect. Workouts and heart rate readings stay on your watch and phone: they aren’t uploaded to your account or sent to us, and other players don’t see them.

Notifications

If you turn on notifications, we store a notification token for your device and your time zone, so we can send match confirmation requests, reminders, and dispute updates. Delivery uses Expo’s push service and Apple’s or Google’s notification service, depending on your phone. Messages can contain a player’s name, a score, and the day of the match, and may appear on your lock screen. You can control notifications and previews in your device settings.

Service records

Our backend keeps records needed to run the service safely. With each sign-in we store the IP address and the type of device used, until you sign out or delete your account. Our hosting provider also keeps short-term logs of requests, which include IP addresses, request times, and account identifiers, for up to 7 days.

How you use the app

To find out where fortyfive is hard to use, the app tells PostHog, our analytics provider, how it’s being used: which screens you open, what you tap, the choices you make while signing in and setting up a match, how long those steps take, and when something goes wrong, such as a sign-in code that didn’t work. These records include your account identifier once you’ve signed in (before that, a random identifier made by the app), the app version and build number, your phone’s model and its iOS or Android version, its language, region and time zone, its screen size and type of device, and when the app is installed, updated, opened and closed. They also note when a match ends and how (played out or ended early, how long it took, and whether it was doubles), when you share a result or add a friend, and whether score announcements are on. They don’t include your email address, sign-in codes, anyone’s name, or the scores and results of your matches.

While you sign in for the first time and while you set up a new match, the app also records the screen, so we can see where people get stuck. Before a recording leaves your phone, the app blacks out everything you type, people’s names, profile pictures, and photos. Recording stops when you reach the app’s home screen or spin for serve, and it never runs while you keep score.

The app asks you first, before you sign in, and sends nothing until you answer. You can change your answer at any time in the app: You › Share how you use fortyfive. While it’s off, the app sends none of these records or recordings.

If you keep score from a watch, the phone notes which points came from it. The watches themselves don’t send anything to PostHog.

Sharing a result

When you create a score image, the app makes a file on your device. The image can include player names, the score, and match details such as the date and duration. The file name also includes the players’ names.

If you choose to share it, the image is passed to the app or service you select in your device’s sharing menu. That service handles it under its own privacy policy. Please check the image and make sure the other players are comfortable with what you share.

Images saved to Photos may sync through your photo backup service. Deleting a match in fortyfive doesn’t delete images or messages you’ve saved or shared elsewhere.

Our website and invite links

playfortyfive.com has no advertising, analytics, or tracking cookies. Cloudflare, which hosts it, processes the IP address and technical details of each request to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.

An invite link contains a code that identifies one invitation. It doesn’t contain your name or email address.

If you open an invite link before installing fortyfive and tap Get fortyfive, the link’s page tells our backend that the invitation was opened. We keep the IP address that came from for up to 1 hour, so the app can find the invitation when you sign up.

Contacting us

If you email us, we receive your email address, your message, and anything you attach. The app’s “Send feedback” button prepares an email containing the app version, build number, how the app was installed, your phone model, and its iOS or Android version. You can edit that email before sending it. Opening the draft doesn’t send it to us.

We use this information to reply, investigate problems, and improve fortyfive. Please only include what you want us to receive, especially in screenshots that show other players’ names.

Sign-in codes come from noreply@playfortyfive.com. Replies to that address aren’t read.

TestFlight testing

If you use fortyfive through TestFlight, Apple collects crash and usage information and shares it with us. It can include device and app details, installation and session information, crash reports, and who you are, depending on how you joined. Feedback and screenshots you send through TestFlight are also shared with us.

We use this information to investigate faults and improve fortyfive. We don’t use it for advertising or pass it on to anyone else. See Apple’s TestFlight privacy notice for what Apple collects and how long it keeps it.

Google Play testing

If you test fortyfive through Google Play, we add the email address of your Google account to our list of testers so you can install it. Google may share crash reports and performance information with us, depending on your phone’s settings. We use this information to investigate faults and improve fortyfive, and we don’t pass it on to anyone else. See Google’s privacy policy for what Google collects.

Advertising and tracking

fortyfive has no advertising. We use analytics only to improve fortyfive, as described in How you use the app. We don’t sell personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or combine it with other companies’ information to track you across apps and websites.

Our reasons for using information

Where UK or European data protection law applies, our reasons and legal bases are:

PurposeLegal basis
Provide your account, scoring, sync, and the friend and shared-result features you usePerforming our contract with you
Record information supplied by other players, including about people without accounts, and keep a shared match in the history of the players who still have itOur legitimate interests in providing accurate shared tennis records, balanced against those people’s rights and expectations
Protect accounts, investigate faults, answer emails, and improve reliabilityOur legitimate interests in keeping fortyfive secure and working well
Learn how fortyfive is used and where it’s hard to use, through usage records and screen recordings of signing in and setting up a matchYour consent, which the app asks for before you sign in. You can withdraw it in the app at any time
Comply with a binding legal requirementCompliance with legal obligations

Notifications and saving to Photos only happen if you allow them on your device. You don’t have to send feedback to use the app, and you can turn off usage records and screen recordings in the app.

Providers and international processing

We use these providers to run fortyfive:

  • Supabase for sign-in, the database, and profile photo storage. Our database is in London
  • PostHog for usage records and screen recordings. Our analytics data is held in the EU, in Frankfurt
  • Resend to deliver sign-in codes by email
  • Expo, Apple, and Google to deliver notifications
  • Cloudflare to host playfortyfive.com and pass on email sent to our playfortyfive.com addresses
  • Google Workspace for the mailbox where we read your emails
  • Apple for TestFlight
  • Google for Google Play testing

Each provider receives only what it needs for its part. Other players and the services you share to receive information as explained above.

Supabase, Resend, Expo, Cloudflare, PostHog, Google, and Apple are based in the United States, and some processing happens there or in other countries outside the UK. That includes Resend’s handling of sign-in emails, Expo’s handling of notifications, and providers’ own support and logs. Where information leaves the UK, it’s protected by safeguards UK law recognises: the UK extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, or standard contractual clauses with the UK addendum. Email us if you’d like more detail.

We may disclose information where the law requires it, or where it’s necessary and lawful to deal with a legal claim.

Keeping and deleting information

We keep your account and profile until you delete your account. Matches are kept to provide your history and shared records until they’re deleted under the rules below.

Deleting a match removes it from your history and, when the deletion syncs, from your other devices. If other players in the match still have it, it stays in their history, and it no longer counts in the head-to-head statistics you share. When nobody else has it, we remove its point history, players, and result, and keep only a marker that it was deleted so your other devices can update.

Deleting your account is in the app, under You › Profile. It removes your sign-in details, profile, profile photo, friend connections, invitations, notification tokens, and the matches nobody else has. It happens straight away. Any database backups are kept for no more than 7 days. Usage records and screen recordings linked to your account are deleted from PostHog within 30 days.

Matches that other players still have stay in their history. Those records keep the name you were recorded under and an internal identifier that no longer links to any account or email address. If you’d like your name removed from those records as well, email privacy@playfortyfive.com.

Deleting your account leaves the matches stored on your phone in place. If you sign in to a new account on the same phone, those matches upload to it. To remove them, delete the app. Removing the app alone doesn’t delete your account.

Match deletion doesn’t clear names the app has remembered on your phone, images in your photo library, workouts saved to Health or Health Connect, messages, or device backups. We can’t erase screenshots or shared images from someone else’s device. Temporary score images can stay in the app’s cache until your device clears it or the app is removed.

Some records are removed on a schedule:

  • Notification records after 30 days
  • Records of notification deliveries after 1 day
  • Invitations 1 day after they expire or, if used, 1 day after they were used
  • The record that an invitation was opened, with its IP address, after 1 hour
  • Notification tokens when you delete your account, or when your device stops accepting notifications from fortyfive
  • Screen recordings after 30 days
  • Usage records after 1 year

We keep emails you send us for up to 2 years after our last reply, and any copies of TestFlight feedback we hold for up to 1 year after testing ends. If a legal obligation or dispute requires longer, we keep only what’s relevant for as long as it’s needed. Apple and Google decide how long they keep information in their own systems.

Your rights

Depending on the law that applies, you can ask to see, correct, delete, restrict, or receive a copy of the personal information we hold about you. You can also object to processing based on legitimate interests. These rights have conditions and exceptions.

Email privacy@playfortyfive.com to make a request or raise a concern, including about information entered by another player or kept in a shared result. We may ask for information to confirm who you are. The app’s own delete buttons don’t limit your privacy rights.

You can also complain to your local data protection authority. In the UK, that’s the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Age

fortyfive is for people aged 16 and over. Please don’t create an account if you’re under 16. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 16, we’ll delete it.

A player may record a match that includes a younger person’s name. Parents and guardians can contact privacy@playfortyfive.com about information we hold concerning their child. We’ll check that the person asking is entitled to.

Changes to this policy

We’ll update this policy if our practices change and show the new effective date. We’ll tell you about important changes before they take effect where the law requires it.
